HS2 BIODIVERSITY INVESTMENT FUND

In November 2020, the HS2 Lords Select Committee announced that £2 million has been allocated to fund Biodiversity specific projects along the Phase 2a line of route. The HS2 Phase 2a: High Speed Rail (West Midlands to Crewe) Bill was given Royal Assent on 11 February 2021

The primary purpose of the Biodiversity Investment Fund (BIF) is to improve the quality of biodiversity along the line of the Phase 2a route through the restoration of existing habitat or the creation of new habitat. HS2 Ltd already has established mechanisms and processes to address its commitment to Biodiversity No Net Loss (NNL) in the construction of Phase 2a and the BIF is not intended to address this.

BIF will be managed alongside and in synergy with the £5m Phase 2a Community and Business Funds (CEF & BLEF).
